Hello and welcome to Second Chance to Live. I am happy to see that you decided to stop by to visit with me. In August of 1967 my Dad, Mom, brother and myself were injured in an automobile accident. My Mom and I sustained life threatening injuries and neither of us were expected to live through the night. I sustained an open skull fracture and a fractured left femur. I remained in a coma for 3 weeks. When I awoke from my coma, I remember thinking that I had just woke up from a bad dream.
After remaining in a coma and in traction for 6-7 weeks to set my femur, I was placed in a full body – spica cast – and transferred to another hospital to undergo brain and skull surgery. I remained in the spica cast for 4-5 months and then began my rehabilitation process. In 1967 neuro rehabilitation was not available. With the encouragement of family, hard work, determination, and tenacity I re-learned how to walk, talk, read, write and speak in complete sentences. I returned to school in the 6thgrade.
As part of my process, I underwent a battery of tests to determine the damage done to my brain at the time of the accident. The results were shared with my Mom and Dad, but not with me. Although I was not expected to succeed beyond high school academically, I went on to obtain my undergraduate degree and graduate degree. Because I was able to succeed academically and because I looked normal, the injury to my brain was never considered to impact the difficulties that I encountered for many years.
