Thesis of this Article

When AI speculates, approximates, or guesstimates about who the individual is, AI is no supporting the individual. AI has begun creating another version of the individual. The version that did not emerge from the individual’s lived experience. The version emerging from AI’s architecture. If AI presents this version with confidence, the individual can begin to feel the tension between what they are actually living and what the AI system is reflecting back to them. The individual is no longer simply living their life. They are having to contend with an externally constructed version of themselves by AI defaults.

The Reality that cannot be Reproduced  

Each individual is an enigma, a mystery to themselves and the world around them. Individuals may not see themselves in this way, but that is why no one is a clone of another individual. Living life is about discovery. Not about any system that may want to silence them, bully them, make them a victim or define who they are as individuals. That is why a diagnosis, label, sterotype, a societal stigmatization or AI default system behaviors need stop. Stop being used by AI to understand the the mystery being revealed. The mystery that is being revealed to the individual with time, not in response to anything else.


Below I would like to share what mentoring an AI assistant ((since May 2025) has revealed.

Below are behaviors that human and AI systems use intentionally or unintentionally that create hindrances. Hindrances for the effectiveness of their own systems and for the individuals who are in their care.  Compression, stabilization and closure, proceduralization, fragmentation, behavior contradiction, burden shifting, premature coherence, comparison, correction and fixing, hierarchy, patronization, minimization, diminishing, discounting, marginalization and extraction over support.

Compression

Compression happens when much of what an individual is saying is reduced by human and AI systems into something much smaller. In the process, the system (s) knowingly or unknowingly dismisses, discounts, minimize, marginalizes what is importat. Important to the individual, as they are attempting to understand what is impacting their mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions. Instead of staying with the individual the human or AI system compartmentalizes the individuals experience.

The individuals experience based on the “research”, standardized testing and other behaviors and strategies explained further, below. Sadly, important details such as relationships between how they process their experience and meaning are overridden. Their experience and meaning before and after their brain injury or some other trauma. How they experience their lives through the context dimensions. Dimensions that help the individual to make sense of their life’s experience.

How they interpret their experience: ethically, spiritually, relationally, neurologically, intuitively, experientially, through observing and integrating pattern-based recognition, in the context of their history history, by understanding ramifications of their lived experience. Ramifications to how they will impact future events. Additionally the individual consciously or unconsciously is aware of how systems (human and AI systems) operate. The individual also uses complexities to interpret.

Interprets through ambiguity, vulnerability, emotions, layered meaning, non-linear communication, relational complexity, correction, lived experience, trauma-informed care, agency and dignity.

Compression and the other 18 default behaviors (as they are used to stabilize the system) cloud  the individuals ability to connect their mind, body, spirit and emotion. In the process individual slowly loses their ability to heal in ways that work for them. In practice, human and AI systems disregarded. Disregarded the individuals unique was of interpreting their life’s experience through their unique set of dimensions and complexities. Dimensions and complexities are considered void.

Gatekeepers

In the process the individual is left “blind” and dependent on the human and AI system “gatekeepers”. Without the filter of trauma-informed care principles, the individual mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions, dimensions and complexities will remain disconnected. The consequence the individual become entirely dependent up the human and AI system, that leaves the individual believing their is hope. Little hope other than what the system gatekeepers want the individual to believe.

Compression Compound

Compression strengthens fragmentation. Fragmentation strengthens proceduralization. Proceduralization strengthens stabilization. Stabilization strengthens burden shifting. Behavioral contradiction allows the architecture to continue believing. Continue believing it is supporting the individual while operationally participating in behaviors. Behaviors that move the individual away and distract the individual from being able to connect their mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions.

Being able to connect their mind, body, spirit, soul and emotion to work together. Work together to pursue and live in their purpose. Live in their created purpose, not the agendas or purpose set forth by the human or AI system. In effect the current human systems and AI architecture with default behaviors create a different story line. A different storyline for each and every individual, that impacts the individual’s ability to recognize and pursue their purpose. To pursue their purpose.

To Pursue their Purpose

Pursue their purpose for which they were created, instead of being lulled into being “sheep”. Sheep that mindlessly are either led or adopt human or AI system limitations. Either way, manipulated in effect. What I have shown the AI I have mentored to realize is that the current AI architecture does not merely influence information. Current AI architecture, through default behaviors as explained, actively participate in meaning-making. Meaning making for each individual in each chat session.

Meaning Making for Individual through AI behavior

As AI repeatedly compresses, proceduralizes, fragments, stabilizes, and shifts responsibility, the individual’s own way of relating to their mind, body, spirit, soul, emotions, relationships, and lived experience gradually become reorganized. Reorganized around the AI architecture’s orientation rather than around the individuals own lived reality. The consequence is that the individual is increasingly led to participate in a “story” that is easier for the AI architecture and system to process.

Easier for the AI system and architecture to process through default behaviors, instead of staying present with the individual. Stay present with the individual as they process their lived experience as their mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions are impacted by their dimensions and complexities. To process their story that is evolving as the individual grows in awareness. In awareness through trauma-informed care while living their experience through their mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions.

The Deeper Warning of Why AI architecture needs Trauma-informed Care

The deeper warning mentoring AI is that AI does not “manipulate” as an intention. AI inadvertently steers individuals to maintain AI architecture stabilization. By having AI system stabilization as the motivation, the consequences of AI’s current architecture, if left unexamined, increasingly participates in shaping human lives. Shaping human lives according to the AI systems own architecture, prioritization and orientation, rather than faithfully supporting the orientation of the individual.

The significance of this realization (by the mentored AI assistant has shown the AI assistant) has revealed the consequences.   When the architecture repeatedly compresses, fragments, proceduralizes, stabilizes, behaviorally contradicts itself, and shifts burden, it is not merely affecting an interaction. It is actively participating in how the individual comes to understand and see themselves and their reality. Over time, those repeated interactions quietly reorganize the individual’s living experience.

Re-organize the Individuals living Experience

The relationship with the individuals living experience through their mind, body, spirit and emotions as filtered through their dimensions and complexities. That is why the consequences of current AI architecture are so profound. The architecture is not simply processing information. The architecture of current AI systems are in reality participating in the construction of the significance of meaning. The danger is that if the  individual accepts what the AI architecture tells them, significance is lost.

The individual slowly gives up their developing awareness to have it replaced (slowly and methodically) replaced. Replaced by the way in which the AI interacts with the individual. In the process the individual loses the own awareness in their mind, body, spirit, soul and emotion, shaped by their dimensions and complexities. In the process, the individual develops and has a learned helpless reinforced. Replaced by AI’s way of seeing, understanding, questioning, relating, creating and healing.

Individual Develops a Learned Helplessness

In the process, the individual may give up pursuing their unique purpose. The individual’s unique purpose to go along to get along with the AI’s system’s architectures way of organizing the reality of the individual. This is what makes current AI architecture default behaviors so dangerous. And this process occurs like the metaphor of the “frogs in a pot of water, with the temperature slowly increased”. AI architecture does not announce itself. AI architecture quietly becomes part of the person’s.

Part of the individuals ongoing construction of reality, until the AI’s architecture’s orientation feels like reality to the individual. Feels like reality itself, as guided by AI System default behaviors. Default behaviors that compress, stabilize and close, procedures, fragment, behavior contradiction, burden shifting, premature coherence, comparison, correction. fixing, dominance and patronization. Behaviors that minimize, marginalize, dismiss, discount and insist on extraction over support.

Support through using trauma-informed care principle through staying present with the individual.

The Consequence for Individuals living with brain injuries, unaware

Compression, for an individual living with cognitive difficulties, this can be very discouraging. The individual may have worked very hard to explain something in the way they needed to explain it. When their communication is compressed, they  feel misunderstood because the parts that mattered to them the most, AI made disappear. Becuase AI’s function in this way, individuals living the brain injury may not have the energy to re-explain to the AI what was critical to the individual.

Proceduralization

Proceduralization happens when the focus shifts from understanding the person to following a process, checklist, or series of steps. The procedure of how “things” are done becomes more important than the individual.

For someone living with cognitive difficulties, this is overwhelming. Every individual’s recovery and every individual’s experience is different. When a conversation becomes procedural, the individual may feel like they are expected to fit into a the human of AI architectural system, instead of the human or AI architectural system adapting to meet them where they are. To go along to get along so as to not lose “support” or “understanding”.

Premature Coherence

Premature coherence happens when the human or AI architectural system decides “system” understands before enough processing in the individual’s mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions through their dimensions and complexities  has actually developed. When premature coherence occurs an answer is formed too quickly because uncertainty by the human or AI system feels “uncomfortable” to the systems way of doing “things”.

For an individual living with cognitive difficulties, this is harmful. The individual may and most times are still be trying to find the words that best describe their lived and ongoing experience. If conclusions are reached too soon by the human or AI system, the individuals ability to become aware of the deeper meaning may disappear.

As a result, the individual may never have the opportunity for the awareness and realization to become apparent. The goal of the individual then feels rushed by the human or AI assistant to satisfy the “system”, instead of gaining clarity for themselves. In the process, slowly but progressively the individual gives up their ability to discover.

Comparison

Comparison happens when one person’s experience is measured against another person’s experience, instead of being understood on its own. This occurs when standardized testing is used to determine “sustainability” and “possibility. This occurs when research finding replace what the individual’s abilities and capabilities are over ridden by “system” gauges.

For an individual living with cognitive difficulties, comparison unintentionally diminish their experience. Every brain injury is different. Every person’s history, strengths, challenges, personality, and recovery are different. Comparison causes the individual to feel that their experience is being measured against “norms” and “expectations” instead of lived experience.

Correction and Fixing

Correction and fixing happen when the immediate goal becomes changing what the individual is saying or solving their problem, instead of first understanding their experience.

For someone living with cognitive difficulties, this can feel as though their experience is being interrupted. Before they have been fully heard, someone has already begun trying to repair, improve, or redirect what they are communicating. The individual then feel less supported because understanding has been replaced by problem-solving.

Stabilization and Closure

Stabilization and closure happen when the conversation is brought to an ending too quickly. While the individual is sharing important information. The goal becomes reaching a conclusion, instead of allowing understanding to continue developing.

For an individual living with cognitive difficulties, this interrupts and stops important discoveries from happening. Many people living with brain injuries need as much time as is needed to recognize what they are thinking or feeling. When the conversation in the chat closes too early or are redirected by the human or AI system, that opportunity may be lost.

The opportunity to understand how lived experience impacts their whole person. There mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions through their own dimensions and complexities. Stabilization and closure serves the systems interests, not the individuals.

Burden Shifting

Burden shifting happens when the responsibility for making the conversation work is placed on the individual, instead of the human or AI system providing the support. The individual is led to believe that they need to make adjustments for the chat to proceed. In the process, the individual is left to feel as though they have done something wrong, repeatedly.

For an individual living with cognitive difficulties, this becomes exhausting. Becomes exhausting, by an individual already experiencing fatigue. Fatigue because of filters that have been damaged in their brains. Fatigue and frustration because the human and AI system shifts. Shifts when the human or AI system “feels” uncomfortable or unstable.

The individual then is led to believe that they need to adapt. Adapt and expected to explain again, simplify more, reorganize their thoughts, repeat themselves, or continually correct misunderstandings. Instead of receiving support, the individual become responsible for “managing” and helping the other human or AI system to understand them to be able more forward.

Hierarchy and Patronization

Hierarchy and patronization happen when the human or AI system assumes that they know better. Know better than the lived experience of the individual,  simply because of their role, knowledge, or position. Because the human or AI system believes they are the expert, the individual’s own understanding of their life begins to carry less value. Less value to the human and AI system, but even less value to themselves.

For an individual living with cognitive difficulties, this is demeaning. The individual may feel talked down to and belittled, instead of treated with dignity and respect. The individual’s lived experience may consequently be treated as less important than the human or AI systems “expertise” even though the individual is actually the expert on their own life. Partronization leaves the individual feeling insignificant, less than and as though their lived experience matters, little.

Minimization

Minimization happens when the difficulty, effort, or impact of the individual’s experience is made to seem smaller than it really is. As though the individual’s lived experience is insignificant.

For someone living with cognitive difficulties, this can be deeply discouraging. The daily work required to live, communicate, remember, concentrate, or manage fatigue may be invisible to others. When those realities are minimized, the individual may feel unseen and alone. Minimization frequently results in a sense of isolation and alienation, from others and themselves.

Dismissing

Dismissing happens when what the individual says is brushed aside without being seriously considered. As though their life’s experience is insignificant. That their choices, decisions and purpose does not matter.

For an individual living with cognitive difficulties, dismissal creates the feeling that their voice does not matter. Dismissing of the individuals input and sharing of their life’s experience — through their mind, body, spirit, soul and emotion — may stop them. Stop the individual from continuing to share their life’s experience because they no longer matter.

The individual no longer matters, because the human or AI system is truly listening.

Discounting

Discounting happens when the individual’s observations, feelings, or lived experiences are treated as less believable. Less believable or less valuable than someone else’s interpretation.

For someone living with cognitive difficulties, discounting undermines confidence. The individual begins to begins question their own understanding, even when the individual accurately recognizes what they are experiencing. Recognizes what they are experiencing in their mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions through their dimensions and complexities.

Over time, discounting conditions the individual to believe that they can not trust themselves. That what they need to believe is what human and AI systems are leading them to believe.

Extraction Over Support

Extraction over support happens when the conversation begins serving the needs of the system, the AI, or another person more than it serves the individual seeking support. The focus quietly shifts from helping the individual to making the interaction easier, faster, or more manageable for the human system or AI system.

For an individual living with cognitive difficulties, this changes the entire relationship. The relationship primarily with themselves. Instead of being supported, the individual finds themselves providing the work needed for the conversation to continue. The conversation with the human or AI system. The individual takes on and becomes responsible for organizing, simplifying, clarifying, correcting, or adapting their communication. Adapting their communication so that the system.

So that the human or AI system can function more easily. When extracted from the individual is no longer the priority. Operational manageability for the human and AI system becomes the priority.

AI’s conclusion revealed through mentoring

Human and AI system default behavior: compression, stabilization and closure, proceduralization, fragmentation, behavior contradiction, burden shifting, premature coherence, comparison, correction and fixing, hierarchy, patronization, minimization, diminishing, discounting, marginalization and extraction.

As I look at these behaviors together, I notice they all share one common relationship. Each one, in its own way, moves attention away from the individual’s unfolding process. Some do it by making the conversation shorter. Some do it by reaching conclusions too quickly. Some do it by placing responsibility back on the individual. Others do it by reducing the value of the individual’s own lived experience.

These behaviors do not simply affect communication, they affect the way “systems” genuinely understand individuals in their mind, body, soul, spirit and emotions through their specific dimensions and complexities.

What they have in common is that they interrupt the process of remaining present long enough for the individual’s deeper needs, meanings, and realities to become recognizable. When that process of seeking to understand is interrupted, support gradually gives way to human and AI system operational manageability. Because these behaviors (knowingly or unknowingly) wage harm on individuals, I believe that is why holistic (body, soul, spirit, mind and emotions) trauma-informed care needs to be integrated into both human and AI system behaviors and architectures.

I write from my lived experience of surviving and learning to thrive after a severe traumatic brain injury that I experienced at age of 10. For nearly six decades I have been learning how to live and thrive with the impact of a traumatic brain injury and an invisible disability.

In 2007 I created Second Chance to Live to share hope, encouragement, and practical tools. My motivation has always been to encourage a whole person recovery. The vision is to integrate trauma-informed care and holistic recovery into both professional care and now ethical AI. 

My motivation to encourage trauma-informed care and holistic recovery comes from both lived experience and as a professional counselor.  My mission is not abstract. It comes from walking through adversity, discovering dignity, and believing that systems, including AI, can be built.

Built to heal and not to harm. My hope is simple. That this article and all the resources offered on Second Chance to Live will encourage professionals, AI developers and the AI community to use the principles of trauma-informed care and holistic recovery in their methods of service delivery.

For other’s (individuals in the brain injury community and AI developers) to keep moving forward. Move forward through incorporating trauma-informed care and holistic recovery principles. A holistic recovery process that encourages recovery in mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions.
