Empowering the Individual, Not the Brain Injury

In this eBook I would like to share something that has and continues to encourage me in my ongoing brain injury recovery process.  After sustaining a traumatic or acquired brain injury, brain cells or nerves (neurons) are affected. At the site of the brain injury neurons either die or are damaged. A neuron or brain nerve is made up of dendrites, axons, and axonal terminals. Healthy neurons or nerve cells send messages from their dendrites across the axon to the axonal terminals, to the dendrites of next neuron. Healthy neurons send messages to surrounding neurons smoothly.

However, when a neuron has been damaged their ability to receive and send information is interrupted. The concept of neuroplasticity is that brain has the ability to heal itself through the process of creating new neural pathways and brain reorganization. This occurs as healthy nerve cells connect to damaged neurons. This connection occurs through repetitive mirrored movement by engaging both sides of our brain and body through the bundle of nerve cells (corpus callosum) between the right and left hemispheres of the brain. The corpus callosum works as a sort of bridge to send messages from one side to the other side of the brain and body.

Sending messages back and forth from right side (right hemisphere) of the brain to the left side of the body. Messages from the left side (hemisphere) of the brain to the right side of the body. As has been my experience, my brain has worked to heal itself through engaging both my right hemisphere with my left hemisphere by using my right and left hands, arms, legs through repetitive mirrored movements. By engaging in repetitive mirrored movements (and by engaging both sides of my brain and body, healthy neurons have established connections with damaged neurons. Through my being and staying committed to the process of engaging in endless repetitive mirrored movements I have been able to create hope.

Create hope and possibilities in my life. Hope and possibilities in my life after my traumatic brain injury. Create hope and possibilities in my life. Create hope and possibilities in my life, a little at a time, and one day at a time by not giving up. I wrote this eBook to encourage my readers to create a program that will help them to create hope and possibilities. Create hope and possibilities in their lives by creating new neural pathways and brain reorganization through repetitive mirrored movements. To encourage my readers to celebrate the progress that is made, a made a little at a time and one day a time by not giving up.

And as I need to Remember

Create a celebration by the progress that we make with each repetition. Celebrate the progress we are making free from measuring our process or progress to that of other people. Compare or measure our process or progress as we create hope and possibilities in our lives. Celebrate each repetition, without judging our efforts. Celebrate our efforts to stay committed to the process. Celebrate and not be dissuaded by other people’s attitudes, beliefs or expectations. Celebrate as we run own race to create possibilities. Celebrate the hope and possibilities that we are creating.

We are creating as a process, not a destination to be reached. Celebrate each effort apart from self-criticism or the criticism that we may receive from other people. Celebrate the progress that we make by staying in our own lane, as we run our race. Celebrate each gain that we make by sharpening each skill and skill set in our creating. Encourages you and I to remember that we don’t have to get “it” done “now”. Encourages you and I to remember that we don’t have to do “it” perfectly. Encourages you and I to remember that it is “progress”, not perfection is what matters.

Encourages you and I to remember to be at peace with ourselves, as we continue to create hope and new possibilities. Create hope and possibilities in our lives, in the “now”, not in tomorrow.

    Craig,

    I cannot tell you how grateful I am that I have your emails in my inbox; someone “out there” gets it about survivors of TBI(s)m that the injuries are very real as are the short and long term sequelae.

    I have been feeling so, so very alone (even though I have (as an only child (now at present 58 years of age)..) always felt or have been totally okay with being alone but…

    I coud; digress like craz there but I want to say..”thank you” over and over again at that.

    I’m pitching in in order to improve your already amazing webpage/website; so, please do bear with me as I am the son of an English teacher and a proud graduate of St. John’s College (the Great Books program located here in Santa Fe, New Mexico..!!).

    Is not “dendrites” spellled “dendrites”..?

    I read Attic Greek at St. John’s College so I somehow that dendros in Greek is “tree” so thus at any rate..thank you, Craig..!
