Empowering the Individual, Not the Brain Injury

Traumatic Brain Injury and Vocational Pursuits Part 3

April 2, 2010 By Craig

Please read Part 1, Part 2, Part 4,  Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8 and Part 9 for context. Thank you.

Through addressing my denial, grieving my losses and learning to accept myself my eyes slowly opened to behold the benefit of my disappointments and discouragement.

Although at the time — when I  was disappointed, depressed and discouraged — I could not see the benefit of my struggles and my disappointments, I now see the bigger picture. I now understand that each of my experiences were coaxing me to encounter my next experience. I now realize that I was being prepared by each disappointment and discouragement.

Through addressing my denial, grieving my losses and accepting myself I became aware of how my traumatic brain injury, my deficits, my limitations and my invisible disability impacted my ability to maintain employment.

Although, at the time I was unable to see the benefit of what I was learning — through my struggles and disappointments — I now realize that I was being empowered. I was being prepared and empowered to use what l learned through each of my educational pursuits. I was being equipped to use what I learned through each of my vocational endeavors.

Through each of the jobs that I had applied for, worked in and was let go from, terminated or fired from I gained critical pieces of information.

My process was being empowered by my educational pursuits and vocational endeavors in physical education, the martial arts, nursing, emergency medicine, theology, the ministry, rehabilitation counseling and in both the cemetery and funeral industries. Each of these experiences gave me the motivation and capacity to move in the direction for which I was created to fulfill — my destiny.

Through the struggles and disappointments that I encountered — in those pursuits and endeavors — I now know that nothing was wasted. I now know that I was being equipped to use my gift, talents and abilities in ways that work for me. I now know that I was being prepared to encourage, motivate, empower and provide hope — because of what I learned in the midst of my discouragement and disappointment.

Please read Part 4 for context. Thank you.
