Second Chance to Live

Empowering the Individual, Not the Brain Injury

Steps That I Took that Effectively Relieved Me of My Anxiety

Steps That I Took that Effectively Relieved Me of My Anxiety
Steps That I Took that Effectively Relieved Me of My Anxiety

Recently I became aware of some information that created anxiety in me. I experienced this anxiety because of what I thought could not be changed. This anxiety lingered and produced frustration and sadness in me. But thank God that I remembered steps taken in the past that relieved me of my anxiety.

What Led to My Remembering these Steps

Several days ago I was speaking with someone at the YMCA where I work out and train. What I shared with him, given what he shared with me gave him hope.

What I Shared with Him that Helped Me

I shared with him when I encounter things that frustrate me I am given choices.

When I encounter matters that frustrated me I need to do the work to get to a place of acceptance. For me this means I need to grieve what I can not change. By going through the process of grieving (denial, anger, bargaining and depression) I gain acceptance.

Gaining Acceptance

As I  gain acceptance, I am given the gift of being able to make different choices. Choices that empower my ability to take a different course of action. An action that will relieve me of my anxiety and give me hope. Hope that gives me the ability to see open doors and new possibilities.

Awareness, Acceptance, and Action
Awareness, Acceptance and Action

“If you don’t like something, change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it. ” Mary Engelbreit

Morning Meditation and Prayer

This morning, during my prayer and meditation I was reminded of what I shared with the gentleman at the YMCA several days ago. As I reflected upon what I had shared with the individual at the YMCA, I realized that my anxiety no longer had to distract me. By accepting what can not be changed, I realized that I choices. Choices to take a different course of action.  A course of action that would help me to see open doors and new possibilities.

Possibilities that would give me hope.

As I thought about the action that I could take I found myself relieved of my anxiety.

As I thought about the action that I could take I stopped feeling helpless.

Today’s Thought

In the event that you are experiencing some anxiety today, I would encourage you to step back. Take out a pen and a piece of paper. Examine why you are feeling anxious.

In the event that you are unable to change what may be leaving you anxious, grieve what you can not change.

As you grieve what you can not change you will reach a place of acceptance. A place of acceptance that will open doors and new possibilities. And as you take different actions your anxiety will be relieved. Actions that will replace fear with hope.

Actions that will help you to stop feeling helpless.
