If you have not already read Part 1 and Part 2 please do so at this time. Thank you.
In my experience, I have found that many people are unable to accept my reality – for whatever reasons. Several years ago I wrote a 4 part series My Struggle Living with an Invisible Disability to share what I learned through my experience. After I wrote that 4 part series, I felt led to write a follow-up 2 part series Having an Invisible Disability – The Consequences of Denying my Reality.
What I discovered was a hard pill to swallow. Not everyone is going to understand or be willing to understand or for that matter accept who I have become in my reality. What I also discovered was that I am ultimately the only one who needs to accept and understand who I am as an individual living with a brain injury. Through accepting my reality, I am empowered to live as a brain injury survivor.
As I understand and accept who I am in my reality, I am able to embrace myself – regardless of whether anyone else gets or understands my reality – as an individual living with a brain injury. With my awareness and acceptance am empowered in my reality.
Consequently, I would encourage each individual — who is living with a brain injury – to spend time learning how their specific brain injury (ies) have affected their cognitive and psycho-social abilities. Through better understanding how our brains have been affected by our injuries, we are better able to accept who we are in our realities. As a consequence, we are better equipped to share who we are in our realities with our family and friends.
