In today’s article, I would like to speak to a tool that has served me many times as I interact with individuals and groups of individuals. This tool has given me peace of mind, eliminated a he said / she said discourse of convolution and aided in me in the process of keeping my side of the street clean. Although I am powerless over what other people say and do, I am not powerless over stating my truth, perception and my motivation.
The tool that I am referring to is the tool of documentation. In essence what documentation establishes (verbally or written documentation) is to let you know, that I know, that we know. Documentation helps me to nip, being misrepresented; in the bud.
During the past several weeks I have had situations arise through my interactions, that have been emotionally charged. Once these situations occurred I took steps to verbally document what occurred with a person in authority connected to the interaction, who may or may not have seen what occurred. I then took further steps to insulate myself by speaking with several other individuals in the tier of authority with in the establishment.
I took further steps by speaking to other people with in the tier of authority to protect myself from being misrepresented by miscommunication among the individuals with in the tier of authority. By doing so I set and put in safe guards and a buffer.
Although I am powerless over the outcome from the “emotionally charged” events, I am able to take steps to protect myself from being misrepresented. In the event that I said some thing, which I did in one of the events during the past several weeks; I can then take steps to making an amends. Through having documented the events that transpired — with the various individuals in the tier of authority — I was able to be clean with the entire process.
Documentation, I have found (either verbally or in writing) serves to curtail anxiety as I work to keep my side of the street clean.
Today’s Thought
In the event that you have emotionally charged interactions with people or groups of people — that have the potential of stirring up anxiety — take steps to eliminate being misrepresented. Speak with the individuals who are in a tier of authority or write them a letter documenting the events, your perception and motivation surrounding the interaction(s). By taking steps to document, you will reduce anxiety in yourself and keep the entire process clean.
