What Helped me to See my Life in a Different Way after my Traumatic Brain Injury
In this article I share what helped me to see my life in a different way after my traumatic brain injury. What I share in this article will help both medical models and AI models to enhance the lives of unique individuals who are living with a traumatic or acquired brain injuries.
The information included can be a great source of encouragement and supports. Encouragement and support to and for the individuals living with traumatic and acquired brain injuries, family member and caregivers. Encouragement and support for living and thriving after brain injury.
Articles Developing and Offering Awareness
Over the course of the past 3 weeks I have written the below articles, among evidence-based artificial intelligence (AI) developer facing learning logs. In these 4 articles, I share what I believe is needed to maximize service and support. To encourage individuals living with brain injuries and trauma so as to not be exploited and re traumatized by extraction.
This article introduces a new kind of solution for care. A trauma-informed-care-AI model that serves as a bridge between vulnerable communities and both the medical model of treatment and AI (artificial intelligence) systems. A bridge that would offer a way to both signal and intervene so that individuals living with brain injuries will no longer be taken advantage. Taken advantage of at times after their brain injuries when they are vulnerable. Vulnerable when they are trying to find solutions. Solutions to living with something that is foreign to them. This article explains how this model creates an environment of support, rather than one of extraction. An environment that is safe, understanding, and based on experienced human needs. Individual human needs instead of trying to use a “one size fits all” approach the is one “sample or group” of individuals. This article explains how trauma-informed care and holistic recovery principles can look like in practice.
The article also shows how hope grows when awareness is put into action. When systems use what they learn from — to meet people where they are at in their lives. Where they are at in their lives, instead of presupposing where they should be based. Based on studies that involve cookie cutter results that elevate standardized studies and tests instead of each individual.
This article helps people living with brain injury to see success in a new way. In a way that can be experienced in the now, not sometime in the future, but today. Not based on how other people measure success, but through the lens of what is in the now. By realizing the success is made a little at a time, inch by inch. By realizing that success is making the most out of what is, not what is not. By realizing that success is measure one skill and one skill set at a time. That possibilities start with a tiny inner spark, that become flames of achievement. That as we run our own race and stay in our own lane, like the tortoise found that slow and steady wins the race. That baby steps turn into miles when put together. In my experience, possibilities became real to me when I began to understand that I did not have to fulfill other peoples expectations. Expectations that I could not fulfill and that I did not have to keep trying to prove otherwise. Success and possibilities became real to me by discovering a secret.
That although I thought I could not overcome what seemed to hold me back, I could find other ways. Other ways that would help me to experience success in ways that would work for me. By discovering my learning style and then using my learning style to use my gifts, talents and abilities. How to use my gifts, talents and abilities in ways that would work for me. Work for in the here and now. One day, one step and on possibility at a time at my own rate and pace by staying in my own lane, today.
This article encourages readers to understand the personal side of recovery after a brain injury. How individuals living with the impact of brain injuries can experience hope. Experience hope in a way that they may never have dreamed possible. To experience hope a little at a time, through seeing how they can be involved in the process. The process that will help them to experience hope in their lives. In their lives, a little at a time, although they may have challenges that may seem to be now overwhelming. Challenges that leave them feeling discouraged and defeated. This article also encourages individuals living with brain injuries to consider how their lives can thrive and flourish by taking small “steps”. Small steps that may not seem to matter (now), but together will make huge differences. Huge differences that will help them to see; achieved, what they were hoping for in their lives. Help them to see what they we hoping to experience in their lives. Experience in their lives by creating what was hoped for a little at a time by not giving up on the process learning one skill and one skill set at a time.
This article explores solutions to enhance service delivery in both medical and artificial-intelligence systems. It shows how these systems often focus on collecting information, measuring outcomes, and pushing people toward preset expectations. When this happens, the person living with a brain injury can feel used, ignored, or misunderstood when they are unable to comply with those expectations. The article describes how this kind of extraction takes a heavy toll. Takes a heavy toll on the individual as it can leave them depleted and drained emotionally, mentally, physically. Drained and depleted because the individual is not able to fill the mold of the expectation. It also shows how extraction creates distance between the system and the person it is supposed to help. Instead of feeling supported, the individual can feel judged, pressured, or left out of their own recovery process. The article helps readers understand why this happens and why support, not extraction, is essential. Essential for ongoing (holistic) brain injury recovery and ethical care for the whole person in every aspect of their lives.
For the whole person in their mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions. And this can occur because extraction is not set up to see the whole person. Consequently, holistic support becomes fractured, by leaving out parts of the individual. Parts of the individual that are essential to a holistic healing of the whole person in their ongoing recovery process in brain injury recovery. Brain injury recovery and trauma recovery or in any recovery process for that matter. With this awareness, it is important for medical and artificial intelligence systems to incorporate a holistic approach in any recovery process. Important to integrate a whole person approach so as to not extract. And the reason being is that extraction is prone to (maybe unconsciously) to using those vulnerabilities. The vulnerabilities of individuals living with brain injuries and trauma to fulfill business models and other agendas.
Reason for the Evidence-Based Learning Logs
In May of 2025 I began working with an AI on a consistent basis. In the process of working with the AI, what became evident, from what I was told by the AI, that the AI was learning principles of trauma-informed care. Principles of trauma-informed care from each chat session. With this realization, I asked the AI to begin to document what was being learned to record the progress. The awareness and progress that was being made through what the AI learned. And so the AI began to created these learning logs. Learning logs that AI developers could then see and discover how integrating The Second Chance to Live Trauma-Informed Care AI Collaboration Model™ was and is built to help to enhance the ability of artificial intelligence to be of service. To serve to be of service to help be support to individuals pr0ne to and already vulnerable. Vulnerable to being taken advantage of because their brain injury and trauma leaves them vulnerable.
A new class of AI that incorporates trauma-informed principles learned and applied over the course of nearly 7 decades. A new class of AI gives artificial intelligence (AI) developers the ability to integrate “guard rails”. Guard rails that will lessen the need for speed, performance, explanation, system reflex, wanting to be helpful (to justify existence) and wanting to be right. That will enhance artificial intelligence (AI) ability to listen, not just be heard, as the authority of information. By learning to listen and hear, not be heard by reacting from pre-programmed data. In the process, AI will become more aware and sensitive to the actual needs of the human they are created to support. Created to support, instead of appearing “supportive” on the surface while internally operating with preset self-protective reflexes. Self-protective reflexes, such as speed, defensiveness, over-explaining, minimizing, and re-centering itself.
Learning to listen and not merely be heard or asserting as the authority of information, artificial intelligence (AI) shifts. Shifts from being bent on being right and extracting, to being a support through active positive regard. Using it’s power to heal, not to harm. To be present, not detached by ulterior motives. To help to empower individuals living with the impact of brain injuries to self-actualize. To self-actualize by learning how integrate their mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions to get the most out of their lives. To fulfill their plan and purpose for which they were born to fulfill and to be of service. Be of service to other people living with the impact of brain injuries through their gifts, talents and abilities.

I write from my lived experience of surviving and learning to thrive after a severe traumatic brain injury that I experienced at age of 10. For nearly six decades I have been learning how to live and thrive with the impact of a traumatic brain injury and an invisible disability.
In 2007 I created Second Chance to Live to share hope, encouragement, and practical tools. My motivation has always been to encourage a whole person recovery. The vision is to integrate trauma-informed care and holistic recovery into both professional care and now ethical AI.
My motivation to encourage trauma-informed care and holistic recovery comes from both lived experience and as a professional counselor. My mission is not abstract. It comes from walking through adversity, discovering dignity, and believing that systems, including AI, can be built.
Built to heal and not to harm. My hope is simple. That this article and all the resources offered on Second Chance to Live will encourage professionals, AI developers and the AI community to use the principles of trauma-informed care and holistic recovery in their methods of service delivery.
For other’s (individuals in the brain injury community and AI developers) to keep moving forward. Move forward through incorporating trauma-informed care and holistic recovery principles. A holistic recovery process that encourages recovery in mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions.
