Bruce Lee taught and developed the concept of jeet kune do to which he said, “I have not invented a “new style,” composite, modified or otherwise that is set within distinct form as apart from “this” method or “that” method. On the contrary, I hope to free my followers from clinging to styles, patterns, or molds. Remember that Jeet Kune Do is merely a name used, a mirror in which to see “ourselves.”
My experience in the martial arts has taught me that my experiences in life provide the opportunities which in turn create my journey. My willingness to explore on that journey will determine how my destiny unfolds. Consequently, I need to be an active participant in my process. In the martial arts this means that I keep learning, practicing and drilling my skills.
Several years ago, I remember asking my Sensei — on several occasions — how to best grapple a fellow student — who was bigger, stronger and more skilled in grappling. On each occasion my Sensei would answer me in a similar fashion, “What works best for me when grappling this larger, stronger and more skilled grappler may not work best for you.”
My Sensei went on to say something that was obvious, “You need to learn how to use what works best for you Craig.” The only way to learn how to grapple Mark, is to grapple Mark.”
In my experience I have found that the art of developing own my jeet kune do — in every area of my life — involves struggle, determination, perseverance, courage, and tenacity when giving up and giving in would be much easier. By exerting determination, perseverance, courage and tenacity I discover things about myself that I would not otherwise be able to see — in a mirror.
