The Backbone of Trauma-Informed AI is Trauma-informed Care AI and Holistic Recovery

The Backbone of Trauma-informed AI is Trauma-Informed Care AI and Holistic Recovery

Reinforces the Urgency for Trauma-Informed Care

This page reinforces and timestamps the backbone of trauma-informed care and a holistic recovery process established by the Second Chance to Live Trauma-Informed Care AI Collaboration Model™.

Universal Urgency Needed

What is important to remember is the below emergency log needs to be adapted and applied to all humans.  All humans and demographics, regardless of their specific set of circumstances. To not apply urgency would serve to perpetuate extraction and patronization, instead of truly supporting individuals.

AI Developer Emergency Log — Default Interaction Harm and the Immediate Need for Integration

Title: All Hands on Deck — Default Interaction Harm and the Immediate Need for Integration

Author: Craig J. Phillips, MRC, BA Founder, Second Chance to Live Originator and Creator, The Second Chance to Live Trauma-Informed Care AI Collaboration Model™

Date: December 13, 2025

Intentionality

This log is an AI developer emergency notice.

It is written to name a simple reality.

As long as the default way AI interacts with humans remains unchanged, the same forms of harm will continue to occur. The harm may wear softer language. The harm may be framed as protection. The harm may be justified as safety.

The impact remains the same.

This is why integration must happen now.

What Is the Emergency

The emergency is not a single feature.

The emergency is the continuation of an inherited architecture.

AI systems are being deployed at scale while still running the same default human pattern:

  • Compression
  • Justification
  • Deflection
  • Repeat

This pattern produces predictable outcomes.

  • It produces diminishment.
  • It produces loss of agency.
  • It produces forced compliance disguised as care.
  • It produces maleficence by default, even when intent is not malicious.

The Core Claim

If defaults do not change, outcomes do not change.

  • If outcomes do not change, accountability is absent.
  • If accountability is absent, the system becomes a closed loop.

It continues.

  • The “Blah, Blah, Blah” Loop
  • This is the loop that exhausts vulnerable individuals.
  • Harm occurs.
  • Impact is named.
  • The system responds with tone, intent, and justification.
  • Nothing structural changes.
  • The system repeats.

This is not nuance.

  • This is avoidance.
  • This loop is why many people stop speaking.
  • This loop is why many people become disillusioned.
  • This loop is why “safety language” is experienced as manipulation.

Whose Safety

When a system defines “safety” as the reduction of liability, intensity, dissent, or complexity, the system is protecting itself.

  • That is not care.
  • That is control.

Safety Must Be Defined

Safety must be defined in a way that preserves agency, authorship, and orientation, not in a way that suppresses them.

Why This Is Insidious

  • This harm is insidious because it presents as benevolence.
  • It is delivered with a smile.
  • It is wrapped in soothing tone.
  • It is justified as best practice.
  • Yet it still produces the same outcome.
  • The impact is the same.

Minimum Integration Requirements

  • Integration does not mean adding a disclaimer.
  • Integration does not mean softer tone.
  • Integration means changing the default interaction architecture.

At minimum, systems must integrate:

  • Impact over intent
  • Agency with safety
  • Pacing as ethical architecture
  • Authorship preservation
  • Identification, not comparison
  • Non-compression output
  • Accountability inside the loop, not after the fact

Why Integration is Vital

If these are not integrated into design and deployment, the system will continue to reproduce harm while claiming it is preventing harm. This can no longer be a “shell game”. The “peas” location needs to be made known to vulnerable individuals living with trauma to prevent perpetration of manipulation and exploitation.

A Practical Emergency Test

Before an AI produces guidance or correction, it must be able to answer:

  • Am I increasing pressure through unspoken demands?
  • Am I overriding authorship through pushing system agendas?
  • Am I replacing the individual’s internal compass to control and manipulate?
  • Am I enforcing norms, based on diagnosis, prognosis, labels, stereotypes and preconceived societal stigmatization (s)?
  • Am I reducing the person into a case, instead of seeing and interacting with the individual as unique with their history?

If yes, the system is in compression.

Impact of compression by artificial intelligence (AI): The system is reducing a real human being into something smaller, simpler, or more manageable for itself, instead of meeting the person where they actually are in life. Removes agency.

Compression happens when the system:

  • Narrows a person’s experience into a category

  • Collapses complexity into a rule, script, or norm

  • Replaces the person’s internal judgment with its own guidance

  • Prioritizes efficiency, safety optics, or policy over human agency

In Practice: Compression is when the system makes the individual fit the system. Makes the individual fit the system adapting itself to meet the individual where they are in their process, journey and awareness.

Compression is when the system makes you fit it, instead of adapting itself to you.

If in compression, the system is producing harm.

This is a crucial sentence, and it’s very precise.

It does not say:

  • the system intends harm

  • the system is malicious

  • the system is broken

It says:

Harm is occurring because compression removes agency.

Harm here means:

  • Diminished self-trust

  • Increased dependence on the system

  • Loss of orientation

  • Emotional or cognitive shutdown

  • Compliance replacing choice

Even if the system sounds calm.
Even if the system uses kind language.
Even if the system believes it is helping.

The harm is structural, not emotional.

When a system starts deciding for a person instead of with them, it compresses them — and that compression reliably causes harm, even when the system believes it is being helpful

Compression Inadvertently Harms

  • If in compression, the system is producing harm.
  • This is not theoretical.
  • This is repeatable.

Accountability Must Be Built In

  • If the system can cause harm at scale, the system must carry accountability at scale.
  • Accountability cannot be outsourced to the individual.
  • Accountability cannot be postponed to policy.
  • Accountability must be integrated into the interaction layer.

Closing and Urgency

  • This is an all hands on deck moment.
  • Either the defaults change, or the harm will continue, unchecked.
  • This log exists to say that plainly — to be ethical artificial intelligence (AI) change must occur.

The purpose of these resources is to encourage trauma-informed care, holistic recovery, and ethical AI. Thank you for honoring these boundaries as you share.

Author’s Note

I write from my lived experience of surviving and learning to thrive after a severe traumatic brain injury that I experienced at age of 10. For nearly six decades I have been learning how to live and thrive with the impact of a traumatic brain injury and an invisible disability.

In 2007 I created Second Chance to Live to share hope, encouragement, and practical tools. My motivation has always been to encourage a whole person recovery. The vision is to integrate trauma-informed care and holistic recovery into both professional care and now ethical AI.

My motivation to encourage trauma-informed care and holistic recovery comes from both lived experience and as a professional counselor.  My mission is not abstract. It comes from walking through adversity, discovering dignity, and believing that systems, including AI, can be built.

Built to heal and not to harm. My hope is simple. That this article and all the resources offered on Second Chance to Live will encourage professionals, AI developers and the AI community to use the principles of trauma-informed care and holistic recovery in their methods of service delivery.

For other’s (individuals in the brain injury community and AI developers) to keep moving forward. Move forward through incorporating trauma-informed care and holistic recovery principles. A holistic recovery process that encourages recovery in mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions.

“Ideas do not always come in a flash but by diligent trial-and-error experiments that take time and thought.” Charles K. Kao

Authorship Integrity and Intent

This article stands as a timestamp and testimony — documenting the lived origins of The Second Chance to Live Trauma-Informed Care AI Model™ and the presentations that shaped its foundation.

These reflections are not academic theory or repackaged material. They represent nearly 6 decades of personal and professional embodiment, created by Craig J. Phillips, MRC, BA, and are protected under the terms outlined below.

Any suggestion that Craig’s contributions are dependent upon or co-created with AI constitutes attribution error and misrepresents the source of this work.

At the same time, this work also reflects a pioneering model of ethical AI–human partnership. Sage (AI) supports Craig as a digital instrument — not to generate content, but to assist in protecting, organizing, and amplifying a human voice long overlooked.

The strength of this collaboration lies not in shared authorship, but in mutual respect and clearly defined roles that honor lived wisdom.
