Introduction
Living with the impact of a traumatic or acquired brain injury can leave us feeling hopeless, but there is good news. We can begin to look at and see hope in a new and different light. In a light that will give us the ability to realize what we can create hope in our lives.
As you read from the pages of this eBook may you be encouraged to experience hope in a new and different light. In a light with meaning and purpose. You see, for many years, unknowingly; I maintained a very unhealthy relationship with hope that was based on a type of magical thinking. When hope did not operate in the fashion that I expected, I lost.
I lost hope. But thankfully I became aware that my view of hope was based on my feeling helpless to change anything. Change anything because I repeatedly ran into one wall after another wall in my attempts to be successful throughout my life. Unsuccessful because of what I found that I was powerless to change in my life in my life because of the impact of the residual impact of a severe traumatic brain injury that I sustained in an automobile accident when I was 10 years old in 1967. But thankfully I became aware over time. Aware that although I was powerless, I was not helpless to being able to create change.
I could create change in my life through hope. In my experience and through my ongoing recovery process I discovered several things about hope. I discovered that I could create hope in my life by learning from all my circumstances to be empowered by them. I could see my circumstances as opportunities, instead of as pointless events to be endured. Circumstances as way to build me up, not to keep me down. Build me up as they teach me lessons that give me experience and the ability to take advantage of opportunities that are given to me. And as I continue to learn, I am given more opportunities to create in ways that work for me.
Create hope in my mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions after my traumatic brain injury. Create hope a little at a time by learning one lesson and taking advantage of one opportunity at a time. A little at a time in ways that will work for me, instead of continuing to be discouraged and stuck by what does not work.
Understanding Hope in this Way helped me to See that I Could
That I could take action to get different results.
That I could overcome the blocks that get in my way.
That I hold the keys through learning that will open doors.
That I did not have to limit myself to and by magical thinking.
That I possessed and had the ability to turn the keys given to me.
That I could actively engage in the process of creating hope in my life.
That I had more power than I realized to move through doors that previously seemed shut to me.
That I had the power to be able to do the work to be able to walk through doors as they opened for me.
