Serenity
I am reminded of the account (in the New Testament) where Jesus and His disciples were in a boat traveling on the sea. In this account, a storm developed and the boat began to rock and the disciples were afraid. Jesus was sleeping in the helm of the boat, unaware of the storm. One of the disciples woke Him and asked, “Are you not concerned that we are sinking? Jesus replied, “You of little faith…did you not know… and He then spoke to the sea and the wind, and they were both calmed”. As I considered this account, two realities became apparent.
As I maintain my faith, I am able to trust God of my understanding with my life. I can depend on this reality. Secondly, I can rely upon Him when I feel overwhelmed and afraid. Through having this awareness, I can trust Him just for today.
I actively seek to maintain serenity each day when I turn my will and my life over to the care of God, as I understand Him. After I have made this decision, I pray for the knowledge of His will for me, and the power to carry that out. Once I have consciously taken these steps, I no longer need to be tossed about by any “crisis” that may develop. I can now ride through the storm and trust that God will be with me. Not only will He be with me, but He will lead me out of the storm.
Through trusting that God is taking care of me, I can let go of any specific outcomes. Because I let go of specific outcomes, I am able to have peace of mind and heart. As I remain dedicated to learn from any experience, I can stay in the now. Serenity no longer needs to be defined by a storm free life. I am therefore able to look for the calm, amidst any storm that may be raging in my world.
