In my experience and through my ongoing brain injury recovery I have found that I needed to involve every facet of my being. I have needed to involve my mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions in my process and journey.
To Achieve My Hopes and Dreams
During the past 54 years; since my traumatic brain injury, I have needed to include my mind, body, soul, spirit and emotions in my ongoing brain injury recovery process. Whether by nurture or nature, each facet of my being was subsequently impacted by the traumatic brain injury that I experienced in 1967 when I was 10 years old.
To dismiss the impact of my brain injury on my mind, body, spirit, soul and body would be inadequate.
Nurture of Nature
“In the context of the nature vs. nurture debate, “nature” refers to biological/genetic predispositions’ impact on human traits, and nurture describes the influence of learning and other influences from one’s environment. The debate over whether the strengths and weaknesses of people are the result of nature or nurture has, and somewhat continues to rage on between scholars and lay people alike. This debate has had significant social implications, particularly concerning what are thought to determine people’s ability to learn/intelligence (Lynch, 2016)”. From the article, ‘Nature vs. Nurture Theory: Is It In Our Genes or Our Environment?'” on MedicineNet.
Involving the Whole Person
In my experience, I needed to examine how my mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions were impacted by my brain injury and my invisible disability. As a result, I have sought to include my mind, body, spirit, soul and emotions in the process of my ongoing brain injury recovery to enhance my life and well-being.
If Nothing Changes, It Remains the Same
How I Understand my Mind, Body, Spirit, Soul and Emotions in My Ongoing Brain Injury Recovery.
Mind – Growing in wisdom and understanding of how to relate to ourselves, other people and the world around us.
Body – Using the principles of neuroplasticity to improve my hand-eye coordination, balance, body awareness, coordination, focus, and agility. Create new neural pathways and brain reorganization through repetitive mirrored movements using both the dominant and non-dominant sides of my body. Through engaging both sides of my body, I engage both the right my right and left side of my brain (hemispheres).
Spirit – My connection to God. My connection to myself. Making peace with God so that I can learn to trust Him and His guidance. Making peace with my past is so that my past does not spoil my present.
Soul – Growing in knowledge and wisdom of how to accomplish what I discovered through my process of acceptance. Learning to use my gifts and talents as I tap into my ability to live my purpose.
Emotions – Learning how to talk, trust and feel with safe people. The power of identification. Coming out of the shadows of isolation and breaking free from feelings of alienation.
