Following a traumatic brain injury strengthening our mind, body, and spirit becomes an important part of our ongoing recovery process. Through a commitment to that process doors open to us.
“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.” Helen Keller
And as we stay committed to the process of strengthening our mind, body and spirit we find the freedom to run our own race.
We become willing and able to walk through the doors that have opened to us.
We are free to celebrate the gains we make without comparing ourselves to anyone.
We are free to develop our mind, body and spirit in ways that work for us.
It’s Never too late to Begin
To strengthen our mind, body, spirit, soul, and emotions.
I am 62 years old. On June 11, 2019, at the Y where I work out a friend took several pictures with my camera. I do not practice Pilates but used the backdrop for the pictures. I workout 4-5 times a week. I train with weights, do a lot of core work, drill in a variety of martial art disciplines, cardio fitness and stretching.
My Encouragement to You My Friend
If you do not have a workout program I would encourage you to create one. Start out slow. Things may seem awkward at first. No worries. Stick with your program. Celebrate your gains. Mix up your workouts, to keep things fresh.
But don’t give up on that process and your journey. Your workouts will empower your mind, body, and spirit. And don’t compare yourself with/to anyone. Run your own race.
“The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.” Lao Tzu
“Once we start walking before long we will be able to look back and see how far we have come on your journey because we did not give up.” Craig J. Phillips MRC, BA

I have a unique problem, when I exert myself the headaches that I have had for 8 years elevates. I usually start the day with a level 3 headache but when I try to do anything that causes my heart rate to increase also causes these headaches to increase. Since I have known pain medication because of the opioid crisis the Drs will not write anything for pain, I do what I can and just stop and go to bed in a dark room. I have a new problem, I have a ruptured disk that has caused pain in my hip and down my leg.

Hi Russell,
Thank you for what you shared with me. Sounds like you have a conundrum. You would like to be able to work out, but because of the side effects from working out headaches and increased heart rate you do not know of any way to work out. I believe I understand. I am sorry that you have those side effects. Kind of like having 2 broken arms but wanting to workout with weights for your upper body. Just is not possible. My suggestion would be to ask your Dr. what kind of exercises you could do that would not harm you, Russell. I am sorry I can not give you more information or ideas. Speaking with your Dr. will help you to find some activity that is safe. Please let me know what your Dr. tells you, Sir. Thank you, Russell. Craig
