Introduction
For you who do not know me, through Second Chance to Live; my name is Craig J. Phillips. I sustained an open skull fracture and traumatic brain injury in 1967 when I was 10 years old. My right frontal lobe was damaged and experiences a severe brain bruise — coup contrecoup — with brain stem involvement. I remained in a coma for 3 weeks and after completing 6-7 weeks of traction to set my left femur (which was fractured in the accident). After completing traction to set my left femur, I was placed in a full body or Spica cast. I remained in that cast for 4-5 months.
Soon after being placed in the Spica cast I was transferred to another hospital — via ambulance — where I underwent brain surgery. In follow-up to the surgery, I underwent a 2 EEGS and a battery of other tests. The results from the EEG’s and cognitive / psycho social testing was shared with my Mom and Dad, but they elected to not share the results with me. My parents were told that I would probably not be able to succeed beyond high school academically. By the grace of God, hard work and determination, I taught myself how to walk, talk, read, write and speak in complete sentences.
Once my external wounds healed and I was able to talk, walk, read, write and speak in complete sentences I was mainstreamed back into elementary school. From the point that I re-entered elementary school the impact of my traumatic brain injury was never again a factor. Consequently the impact of my traumatic brain injury remained unknown to me for many years. I continued to run into walls for many years which left me bewildered and disappointed. To read a detailed account of what led to my attempts to make sense of why, you may read my detailed about page by clicking: HERE
Because I kept running into walls, despite my fervent attempt (s) to avoid them; I found myself grappling with the question Why? and What is my Destiny?
On February 6, 2007 I created Second Chance to Live to share some of the awareness’s’, lessons and discoveries that I made through my search to answer these two 2 questions“Why?” and “What is my Destiny?”. In this e Book, I offer a selection of articles, in which I share pieces of information; that have helped me to make sense of Why?” and to answer the question,“What is my Destiny?”. As an individual living with a brain injury, the information in this eBook may help you to make sense of why and in the process help you to answer the question,”What is my Destiny?.
You have my permission to share my articles and or video presentations with anyone you believe could benefit, however please attribute me as being the author of the article (s) video presentation (s), and provide a link back to the article (s) on Second Chance to Live. In the event that you have questions, please send those questions to me. All questions are good questions. Thank you. I look forward to hearing from you. Copyright 2007-2015.
