Second Chance to Live

Empowering the Individual, Not the Brain Injury

Traumatic Brain Injury and Creating Community Part 5

May 18, 2010 By Second Chance to Live

Please read Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 6 for context. Thank you.

In my experience I have found that people can not give to me what they do not possess. Although I may buy into the notion that I can get what I need from them, my experience has proven that I am going to the hardware store looking to by bread.  What is important is that we go to the grocery store to buy bread.

What I mean by this my friend is that by recognizing and accepting the nature of our reality, we can start looking to people who can give to us what we need. In my experience, I have found that only another brain injury survivor can really understand what I experience on a daily basis. Through recognizing this reality, I can begin to reach out to other brain injury survivors to get support, encouragement, motivation, empowerment and hope.

Retrospectively speaking, one of the reasons I created Second Chance to Live was to reach out to other brain injury survivors — to create community. Through writing and receiving comments and questions I have been able to experience community. I have been able to learn things about myself and learn things about you my friend. As I have reached out to you I have heard from of you. Thank you. In the process, we have been experiencing community.

In my experience I have found that relationships do not work —  or last — unless both parties actively pursue the relationship. I have also found that communities can not form and be sustained without the individual participation. Members in the community enhance the community through actively investing in lives of the members with in the community. Through investing in each others lives, we are fed through feeding each other.

Please read Part 6 for context. Thank you.
