Hello and welcome back to Second Chance to Live. I am happy to see that you decided to stop by to visit with me. Last Wednesday evening I attended a meeting where the topic of progress in recovery was introduced. The individual prefaced the discussion by asking individuals to share what has helped them most in their recovery process. As the sharing began I listened and reflected upon factors that have helped me in my recovery process. Because of the size of the group I was unable to share my experience.
During the week I felt led to share those factors with you, however, because I was in the midst of developing a series I decided to wait. Now that I have finished the series — Traumatic Brain Injury and Learning how to Love and Accept Myself — I want to share those factors with you. In my experience I found these factors to be pivotal in my recovery process. In my experience, I needed to be in a supportive network where people would allow and encourage me to process my reality.
In my experience, I discovered that — to move forward in my recovery process — I needed to learn how to talk, trust and feel. You might say, “Wow, I thought you already knew how to talk, trust and feel”. To that statement I would say you are right, at least I thought I knew how to talk, trust and feel. What I discovered — through my recovery process — was that I really did not know how to talk, trust and feel.
As I started to learn how to talk, trust and feel my recovery process took on new meaning. Through learning how to talk, trust and feel I have been able to grow in my ability to love and accept myself. Through learning how to talk, trust and feel I have been able to confront my denial. Through learning how to talk, trust and feel I have been able to stop fighting against myself. Through learning how to talk, trust and feel I have been able to find the freedom to be myself.
I have written several articles in which I share what I have come to understand. For an in-depth understanding into what I learned — through my recovery process — please read these articles. Don’t Talk, Don’t Trust and Don’t Feel, The Three Rules Revisited — Consequences, Whose Shame are you Carrying? and Displaced Sadness.
