Hello and welcome back to Second Chance to Live. As I have shared with you in past articles I passed an 8 hour progress check at the martial arts school where I have been training for over 7 1/2 years. The progress check occurred November 8, 2008. On December 1, 2008 my Sensei met with me to tell me that I passed the progress check and would be able to enter the black belt cycle in January 2009.
The black belt cycle lasts for 10 months to prepare the brown belt students for the black belt test October 23-25, 2009.
So on January 1 I began my journey through the black belt cycle. I was so happy to be apart of the process that I believe I over trained. This past Tuesday during a fitness kick boxing class at the martial arts school my right knee began to bother me. I tried to work through the discomfort during the class, however the discomfort quickly turned to pain. Although I wanted to complete the class, I listened to my body and decide to leave class and the martial arts school early.
After arriving home I took an Ibuprofen — an anti inflammatory — and placed an ice pack on the affected section of my knee. Wednesday morning when I awoke I had a difficult time walking with out significant pain. Consequently, I called to make a decision to make an appointment to see my physician.
Due to my inability to walk with out pain, I called my Dr.’s office and made an appointment to see my Dr. the next morning. During the appointment the Dr. examined my knee and gave me the news. He told me that I had a medial lateral collateral ligament sprain / strain — my right knee. Thankfully, his examination revealed that I would not need surgery, however — with the news — the Dr. told me that I would need to stop training at the martial arts school for a minimum of 4 weeks.
