I have not written any articles in the past several weeks because I was visiting family members. In several articles that I wrote prior to leaving on vacation — Neuroplasticity, Small Successes, and Learning / Relearning Skill Sets and Martial Arts, Neuroplasticity and Recovering from Brain Injury – I shared the benefits that I gained through using the principle of neuroplasticity.
I shared these articles to encourage you — if you have not already begun — to begin to mirror / duplicate skills that you are able to do in your dominant hand/arm/leg to your nondominant hand/arm/leg. Martial arts does not have to be the way in which you create new neural pathways and brain reorganization. My encouragement to you is to try different ways to find the way that works best for you, my friend.
Several weeks ago; on August 22, 2014, a friend of mine kindly used his camera phone to record the demonstration that I was giving to benefit several interested individuals. The video presentation lasts for 1 minute and 50 seconds. In this video presentation, I combine different styles — components of western boxing, kali, wing Chun and modern arnis — to develop and create new neural pathways and brain reorganization for both my dominant and nondominant hands/arms. To give me the ability to move/use my hands, arms and legs in new ways. I do so to create new large motor and fine motor skills.
I have been training and drilling in martial arts 4-5 times a week 40 -60 minutes each session for the past 16 -17 years. In my experience, I have found that persistence and tenacity have given me the ability to accomplish things that I previously dreamed impossible.
I would like to share the video presentation with you to encourage you to not give up. To watch this video presentation, please click on this image:
Since the writing of this article, I have continued to work on developing new neural pathways and brain reorganization through ongoing repetitive mirrored movement. Friends have helped me by video -taping my ongoing gains. To watch video presentations made in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017, you may click on the below links. Clicking on the links will open the presentations.
Note: A word of encouragement. I am 57 years old. You are never too old to use the principle of neuroplasticity to develop and create new neural pathways and brain reorganization. To create large motor and fine motor skills and abilities in your hands/arms and legs beyond what you ever dreamed possible. To accomplish things that you previously dreamed impossible.
