In August 1967, when I was 10 years old, I sustained an open skull fracture with right frontal lobe damage in an automobile accident.
In 1967 little was known about traumatic brain injuries or invisible disabilities. Consequently, once my external wounds healed and I looked normal the impact of the right frontal lobe, severe brain bruise with brain stem involvement became irrelevant.
Irrelevant as to how my traumatic brain injury got in my way. Consequently, I was essentially on my own to navigate life.
Because of the invisible nature of my traumatic brain injury, I had ongoing difficulties. Difficulties in having a relationship with myself, family members, other people and the world around me.
But thank God that after confronting and owning my denial I began to grow in awareness.
The Impact of My Invisible Disability
I grew in the awareness of the impact of my invisible disability and how my invisible disability impacted my relationships.
And as I grew in the awareness and acceptance of the impact of my invisible disability I began to discover myself.
In the process, I began to discover what I could do with my life, despite the invisible nature of my disability.
What I Could Accomplish with my Life despite my Invisible Disability
In Retrospect
In retrospect and over the course of the past 51 years living with the impact of a traumatic brain injury and an invisible disability, I have learned valuable lessons.
Valuable lessons that have helped me to begin to discover and understand myself as I interact with myself, family members and the world around me.
Sharing what I have Learned
On February 6, 2007 I created Second Chance to Live to share lessons that helped me to begin to discover myself.
Below are the Lessons Learned through Discovery
In the interest of sharing what I discovered in a variety of languages I created a tool.
