I typically do not write articles to enter the political arena, however, at this time I feel compelled to share my thoughts on school shootings, gun control and solutions for school safety.
Last week, a horrific event took place in Parkland, Florida. An event in which 17 lives were cut short. In the aftermath of that event and in the wake of other school shootings a cry for change has reached a “fever pitch”. A “fever pitch”, rightly so, with cries to change legislation and a ban of guns.
Guns do not kill people, People kill people using guns.
I heard a saying some time ago, “Trust God, but tie your camel to a post” that spoke to me. The saying encourages me to Trust God, but still be prepared. Over the course of the past 18 years I have trained in different martial art disciplines. I have done so to, “tie my camel to a post”. I have done so to be prepared if in the event that I have to defend myself or loved ones.
Burying One’s Head in the Sand
I have also heard another saying, “bury one’s head in the sand” and “hide one’s head in the sand”; “have one’s head in the sand”. What this saying speaks to me is that by “burying one’s head in the sand” means that reality is ignored, in order to avoid having to face, confront and deal with reality.
In my estimation, a lack of preparation is a sure recipe for vulnerability. To suggest taking guns out of the hands of people who are determined to get them is likened to burying one’s head in the sand. On the other hand, preparation is likened to trusting God and tying one’s camel to a post.
in my opinion, preparing teachers to defend themselves and their students; through conceal and carry in schools, is prudent.
Teachers can choose whether they want to participate in such a conceal and carry program, but in my opinion self-defense is the best way to avoid being victimized.
Being prepared, in the event that a “shooter” breaches the school, is the best way to protect students. NOT being prepared to stop a “shooter” is a sure way to not protect students.
