Hello and welcome back to Second Chance to Live my friend. I am happy to have you around my table. Thank you for making the decision to stop by to visit with me. Recently a friend and reader of Second Chance to Live asked me a question. His question got me to thinking. He asked me how I would define my website, Second Chance to Live. What he asked me helped me to reflect upon my mission and vision. What he asked helped me to take a step back and share what I have been about for a little over 9 years. I am glad he asked and will do my best to answer his question.
Back Ground
For many years I felt like some one all dressed up with nowhere to go in life. Although I had diligently applied myself both academically and vocationally I found myself running into one wall after another. In my search for answers I started to look for solutions. Solutions to a conundrum that I had no idea existed. Solutions to what could not be seen or understood, but nevertheless created obstacles and adversity in my life. Obstacles and adversity socially and financially. In my quest for solutions I began a program of recovery learning from people who had what I wanted; serenity.
So in August 1986 I began attending meetings and got a mentor to help me through the process of discovering what was no longer working for me. In the process, and over time; I began to break three rules that kept me stuck. I started to learn how to talk (share what was going on in my life), trust (people who proved themselves trustworthy) and feel (learn how to process my feelings and keep the focus on myself). Attending meeting and working with a mentor (who had what I wanted, serenity) was the beginning of my recovery process. Overtime I began to heal and find serenity.
In 1998 after being hired and fired from jobs (too many times to count), after 2 evaluation process and 3 applications I was deemed unemployable and declared disabled. Deemed unemployable by the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation and declared disabled by the Social Security Administration. Although I felt like some one all dressed up with nowhere to go I wasn’t finished. Although what I had to offer seemed to go no where vocationally, I still felt very strongly that what I had learned through my varied educational and vocational pursuits, was ; and could be of great value.
Focus
Because my process and journey had taught me many lessons I felt a strong leading to search out a way to share what I had learned through my recovery process. To make a long story short (which you can read more by clicking: HERE) I created Second Chance to Live on February 6, 2007. Second Chance to Live became the medium in which I could share what I had learned that helped me to overcome obstacles and adversity. Obstacles and adversity in my body, soul and spirit. Obstacles and adversity that kept me in isolation and stranded from hope.
I am a brain injury survivor and living with an invisible disability, BUT; I am not my brain injury nor my invisible disability. These are “some thing” I live with, like some one living with diabetes. And as diabetes does not define the individual, neither does my brain injury and invisible disability define me. Although many of my articles and titles of my e Books contain brain injury, the information presented offer hope. Hope to anyone facing or experiencing trauma, abuse or adversity in their lives. Trauma, abuse or adversity whether you are living with a disability or not.
