Recently I heard someone speak about seasons. What they shared generated some thoughts I would like to share in this article. Although the word seasons frequently bring to mind the time of the year — winter, spring, summer and fall — I would like to speak to another kind of season. The season that I am referring to is the time between planting seeds and the harvesting of the results from those seeds. Farmers plant seed in their fields and at an appointed time they harvest what the seed produced.
Seeds planted by farmers have measurable outcomes. Seeds of another kind many times do not have measurable outcomes.
The “seed(s)” that I am referring to involve the effort to achieve goals, milestones or bring about or affect specific change. Because the planting of these kinds of seed(s) may not result in measurable outcomes, the planter of the seed may wonder. Wonder, like a child who planted a seed in a milk carton, if the seed is actually growing. Because the growth of the seed is out of view, the planter may find themselves questioning if their efforts to seed(s) is worth their efforts. The planter of these seeds, may as a result; find themselves discouraged because of the lack of measurable outcomes.
“Don’t judge your day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant.” Robert Louis Stevenson
Seasons take on new meaning when considering the harvesting of seeds that are not easily measured. Seasons become the space between planting the seed and then letting go of the harvest. Seasons become the effort involved in watering and cultivating the seed through tenacity and persistence. Seasons require attention and commitment. Seasons become the process and the journey, instead of the destination and outcome. Seasons involve trusting the process, a loving God and ourselves when we don’t see measurable growth. Seasons involve running our race and staying committed to our course.
Seasons, I am finding; means that I need to practice easy does it. Seasons, I am finding; means that I need to only do the footwork. Seasons, I am finding; means that I need to let go and let a loving God take care of the timing and the outcomes or harvest. Seasons, I am finding; means that I can let go of control, the BIG picture and trust that the dots will connect forward.
