Last Wednesday afternoon, after walking into my kitchen; I heard my refrigerator making a grinding type sound. This concerned me, so I called the office in the apartment complex where I live these days. Told them what was up and they told me some one would be out to check it. if not later that afternoon; in the morning. Well, after noticing that the noise was getting louder, I made the decision to call the office again. About 5 minutes later maintenance came to see what was up. Upon their examination the automatic defroster had stopped working which resulted in ice crystals like snow forming in the back of the freezer part of the refrigerator. Maintenance told me that they would be back the following day to determine the problem.
After maintenance arrived and after I removed items from the freezer, they began to manually defrost the freezer to determine if the heating coil needed to be replaced. After defrosting the back of my freezer, the coil was removed and determined to be working. After checking with the maintenance supervisor, it was determined that the refrigerator thermostat would need to be replaced. That could not be done until the next day, because the maintenance supervisor would need to go and pick that up from a parts supply place for such a thermostat later, Thursday afternoon. Well Friday came and no one came to switch out the thermostat, so I gave the office a call to find out if maintenance was coming to fix the refrigerator.
I gave the office a call about a half hour before the maintenance staff ended their day. I was told that the no part had been delivered and they would get back to me on the following Monday. I told the person at the office, OK and decided to let go of the matter. My refrigerator and freezer were working fine, it was just that the refrigerator thermostat needed to be switched out. Consequently, there was no concerns of my food spoiling. Well, Monday came and I left to attend a meeting and when I got home noticed that the refrigerator looked different. Yup, that’s right. They gave me a new refrigerator. I was thrilled, so I called the office to thank them for giving me a new refrigerator. After getting off the phone I opened the refrigerator.
Although I felt truly blessed by my new appliance, upon further examination, I saw what there seemed to be flaws as I compared to the old refrigerator. The space in my new refrigerator seemed a bit cramped. My perfectionism saw what I considered to be a drawback to having this new refrigerator and freezer. Initially and for a few days I found myself wanting my old refrigerator back. Well, I let go of the notion of having my old refrigerator and freezer back and something very simple, but profound dawned on me. I could move one of the racks down a notch in the refrigerator to make more space. So later that day, I removed the food from the new refrigerator and moved the rack one notch and found that I had more space.
Moral of the New Refrigerator
What the experience, as I explained above: reinforced to me is that I may not like some thing because I have not considered the possibilities. I may find myself focused upon what I am used to and by doing so may not be able to recognize the benefits that exist. What the experience of the new refrigerator reinforced to me was that by stepping away and being open to alternatives, new ideas will present themselves to me. And so I need to remember with life in general. When events occur in my life, that are new and different from what I am used to; I can be encouraged to consider the possibilities. Benefits that may not readily be apparent will present themselves to me. I just need to let go, stay open to new ideas and give myself time.
Today’s Thought
In the event that you have some thing new in your life, consider the possibilities. What may not be apparent to you at the present time will reveal themselves to you. Stay open to alternative ways of looking at what is new and different to you. Step away and do something different with your time. Benefits that may not be readily be apparent will present themselves to you. Let go, stay open to new ideas and give yourself time with the process.
