Recently, I had several spiritual awakenings that have helped me to connect some dots that I was having a difficult time connecting. Sunday night on Celebrity Apprentice Gary Busey was a project manager. He put together a commercial to showcase the functionality of a variety of LG products. At one point in the commercial Gary — as the Dad – presented himself as confused while standing talking with his wife next to the refrigerator. His wife – in the commercial — suggested that Gary to and told him to go and sit down. Gary said, “Oh my God”, kissed his wife on the cheek, said I love you, she responded in kind and then went to sit down with his son in a makeshift living room. His wife in the commercial went on to explain how LG products could benefit the whole family.
At one point, his wife asked the question, “What will LG think of next?”. After she asked this question, Gary said a mechanical dog and barked several times to illustrate a mechanical dog. His son sitting at the end of the couch near where Gary was sitting in a chair, stood up and sat Gary back down into his chair. At this point in the commercial his “son” gave him a smart phone, upon which Gary said, “Thank God for LG, otherwise I would be a mechanical dog for the rest of my life. For that I thank you LG”. Gary went on to say that LG products make me smarter, so I do not have to think. Gary then moved from the chair in which he was sitting to the couch with his wife, son and daughter to watch some TV. The family settled on watching a commercial showcasing LG products. At this point in the commercial Gary said, “Life is good when you live smart with LG.”
Gary’s mechanical dog barking vignette in the commercial was evaluated as being strange by pretty much everyone on Celebrity Apprentice. Although Gary’s mechanical dog illustration was dismissed as “weird, I saw his illustration and mannerism during the vignette as genius. His brilliance became apparent when after barking several times his son stood up to sit Gary back down, I believe Gary illustrated a confused state, contrasted to a state of clarity by having a smart phone to use LG products — so that he would not be a mechanical dog for the rest of his life. I thought that his commercial should have won. His team suggested that he be the project manager and then did not appear to support him with the making of the commercial, which ultimately led to him being fired from the Celebrity Apprentice. Recently, I wrote the following on Gary Busey’s Facebook Page.
“I want to let you know that I understood your barking mechanical dog analogy the other night on Celebrity Apprentice — going from madness and confusion to being able to connect the dots through LG products. You, like myself; think outside the box. Not everyone thinks in “colors” or non sequiturs like we do Gary. Although other people may not understand our point, their lack of understanding or unwillingness to understand our perspective does not minimize it’s brilliance.”
I share the above with you to illustrate a point. Not every one — maybe many – will see your, our creative brilliance and genius. Their inability to see your / our creative brilliance and genius does not negate the reality of your / our creative brilliance and genius. Their lack of awareness only illustrates an inability to see your / our creative brilliance and genius. Consequently, my encouragement to you — as I need to encourage myself as a traumatic brain injury survivor — pursue that which makes you feel most fully alive, regardless of whether the people around you can see what you and I see my friend. Your / our creative brilliance and genius will be apparent to those who have eyes to see and ears to hear. Paint in bright colors with your life and turn up the volume and be yourself. Celebrate who you are as an individual, your value and what you bring to the table of life.
“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They some how already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. “ Steve Jobs
