Hello and welcome back to Second Chance to Live my friend. Yesterday I wrote an article for the family and friends of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords – who sustained a traumatic brain injury in the shooting rampage of Jared Loughner in Tucson, Arizona on January 8, 2011. In that article – Traumatic Brain Injury – For the Family and Friends of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords – I offered some support to both Gabrielle and to her family and friends.
In the article to her family and friends, I included links to several articles that I have written to encourage, motivate, empower and provide hope to traumatic brain injury / acquired brain survivors, their family and friends — in the wake of having sustained a brain injury.
After I completed that article, I decided to write an article to offer the links to the articles that I provided to Gabrielle Giffords, her family and friends. My hope is that as individuals — who have sustained brain injuries — their family and friends read these articles, each party will be encouraged, motivated empowered and given hope to live with in the aftermath of the brain injury. My hope is that as these articles are read, the brain injury survivor will continue to be supported once their physical injuries and wounds have healed.
Although our physical wounds and external injuries may have healed the impact of our traumatic brain injuries remain. My encouragement to families and friends of individual who have sustained brain injuries, go on-line through Google or the other search engines and research how the injury to your loved one’s brain may affect his / her behavior and cognitive abilities. Denying, dismissing, minimizing or marginalizing the injuries to our brains will not help anyone, but will only serve to create rifts and divides between all parties involved.
As an individual who has lived with a traumatic brain injury and an invisible disability for 43 years, I share from my experience, strength and hope and from the power of identification. As you read through my articles, I believe my perspective will enhance your awareness, insight and understanding. As you have questions, please feel free to ask. All questions are good questions.
