In today’s article I want to share something that helps me in the process of overcoming my fear of failure. I gained this insight from my involvement in my martial arts training.
This insight was reinforce by something my Sensei (martial arts instructor) with us at the beginning and ending of each class, particularly when we grappled and/or sparred.
Sensei would encourage each student to have a specific goal to work on during the class. In his instruction, Sensei reinforced a very valuable principle – work on one skill at a time.
By working on one skill at a time each student was able to drill the skill, apply the skill and grow as a martial artist.
Sensei’s simple bit of instruction, “work on only one skill” when you grapple and/or spar not only empowered my ability as a martial artist, but has also empowered my ability to live and thrive as an individual living with a brain injury.
Many years ago I heard some one share a riddle.
The riddle has since had a profound impact upon my life. I have used the principle — as found with in the riddle — in many areas of my life. You may have also heard the riddle. The riddle asks,“How do you eat an elephant?”. When I heard the riddle,
I initially felt overwhelmed – as elephants are typically very large animals — until I heard the answer to the riddle, “One bite at a time”.
The answer simple, but the meaning very profound. One bite at a time.
