As you might imagined I was thrilled to hear that surgery would not be needed to repair my knee.
Nevertheless, I found myself both frustrated and disappointed at the same time. My frustration and disappointment arose out of the reality that I may not be able to pursue my black belt through the black belt cycle. Consequently, I may not be able to test for my black belt this coming October. Although I was initially disappointed and frustrated — by the reality — I then remembered that I could use the power of choice.
When I forget to remember that I have choices — regardless of what occurs in my life — I set myself up to believe that I am a victim of my circumstances.
When things do not go the way that I had hoped for — in life — I don’t have to feel helpless. I can use the power of choice to empower my process. Consequently, I can choose to accept the things that I can not change. I can choose to change the things that I can — my attitude and my perspective, and I can have the wisdom to know the difference by trusting the process, trusting a loving God and by trusting my ability to learn from the circumstance (s).
Consequently, I can choose to look for the silver lining amidst what may appear to be a dark cloud. I can choose to believe that I am being led in the right direction — even when things do not go as we planned.
When I choose to surrender to the process I open myself to possibilities. By surrendering to the process I become willing to consider what might have otherwise been hidden to me. One such opportunity occurred over the weekend. Because of the injury to my knee and my inability to train at the martial arts school on Saturday, I was able to attend an annual series of meetings. Had it not been for the injury to my knee, I would have been unable to attend those meetings.
When I choose to let go when things do not go as I have planned I am able to trust the process, a loving God and myself.
So — when things do not go as I planned — I do not have to remain frustrated and disappointed. Instead, I can remind myself that other possibilities exist. So — in the event that you have things in your life that are not going as you planned — let me remind that possibilities exist. You and I just need to be willing and open to consider our options.
“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one that has opened before us.” Helen Keller
