Please read Part 1 of 2 for context. Thank you.
If you advance confidently in the direction of your dreams and endeavor to live the life that you have imagined…you will meet with success unexpected in common hours.” Henry David Thoreau
I have heard that the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. If I focus on the thousand miles I may never begin my journey. On the other hand, if I focus on putting one foot in front of the other — figuratively speaking — before long I will be able to look back and see how far I have come on my journey. My progress will become obvious because I decided to take that first step. Your rehabilitation process may look like that journey of a thousand miles. Consequently, you may be overwhelmed and daunted by what lies ahead. My encouragement to you my friend is to take that first step in your rehabilitation process and once your have begun keep moving.
Let me encourage you with this my friend. You are not alone. Through my rehabilitation process I too have considered if taking the first step would be worth the effort. Let me share with you what I have learned. The first step has paid huge dividends.
One of the lessons that I have learned — through my rehabilitation process as a brain injury survivor — is that when I do not give up on myself or my process I grow stronger. I may have set backs and disappointments, but those experiences do not have to slow my process. I can learn from them and decide to start again. On my journey in the martial arts I have learned a valuable lesson. The process far exceeds the destination. As I have been taught through my disappointments and set backs I have been prepared to fulfill what is required of me. Through my rehabilitation process I have grown strong enough to move one step closer to my black belt.
As a brain injury survivor, my rehabilitation process has prepared me to use my gifts, talents and abilities in ways that work for me. In the process I have be prepared to pursue my destiny.
Be assured my friend your toil is not in vain. Like a butterfly that has to break free from it’s cocoon — in order to be able to fly — so you will grow stronger through your rehabilitation process. You will learn to fly again. You will reach your goals and experience your dreams. You will learn to use your gifts, talents and abilities in ways that work for you and you will fulfill your destiny.
Be encouraged my friend, take that first step in your rehabilitation process and then keep moving.
