Over the past several days I have been thinking about several quotes that I have written on 3×5 cards. When I find a quote that sparks my interest I write the material on a 3×5 card for future reference. In my experience I find that such quotes spark possibilities. I want to share several of those quotes with you today.
“Live your beliefs and you can turn your world around.” Henry David Thoreau
This quote challenges me to pay attention to what I am believing about myself and my world. Consequently, I am reminded that I need to examine my beliefs and how those my beliefs are impacting my life and the lives of those individuals that are a part of my sphere of influence.
“There is nothing that fear and hope does not permit men (women) to do.” Marquis De Vauvenargues
This quote encourages me to examine what is driving my life. Through taking the time to be honest with myself I can make choices to empower my process. I can choose to trust the process, a loving God and my ability to learn from my experience. When I choose to trust and learn I choose hope. I choose to consider the possibilities.
“Success…it’s what you do with what you’ve got” Leroy Van Dyke
This quote is short, but sweet. What we do with what we have will — in large part — determine our success. By using our gifts, talents and abilities in ways that work for us — regardless of our brain injuries, our disabilities, our deficits or our limitations — we determine our success. Our capacity to grow through our experience brings about our success.
“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door, that we do not see the one that has opened before us.” Helen Keller
This quote reminds me that although I may have brain injury, a disability, deficits and limitations I do not have to be limited. Certain doors may have closed for me, but other doors have swung open wide. I can choose to look for the open door.
Today’s Thought
Learning to thrive and not merely survive has a lot to do with the choices that I make in life. What I choose to believe. What I choose to permit to drive my decisions in life. How I choose to use or not use my gifts, talents and abilities. Whether I choose to limit myself because of a lack of acceptance. If I choose to consider the possibilities.
The good news is that I can choose to start a new. I can choose to examine my beliefs — about myself and my world. I can choose to learn from my experience. I can choose to do the necessary grief work to get to a place of acceptance. I can choose to be open to the possibilities.
Through my choices I can choose hope.
