Towards the end of my 2 1/2 hours of chain link fence vine removal the man who had given me the project to remove the vines from the fence walked over to where I was working. As we started talking about the fence and the project I mentioned to him that the work of removing the vines was very tedious. When I mentioned that the work was very tedious, I believe he realized that I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with the immensity of the the project. The man said something that helped me tremendously.
He said something like this to me. “That is why doing a little at a time is the best plan.”
After he made that statement I still found myself a little bit overwhelmed by the seeming immensity of the vine removal project. After I gathered up the vines that I had removed and put them in the trash I began to think about what my friend had said to me, “…a little at a time is the best plan.” On my way home from the church I thought about what that man had said to me. His words helped me to put the seeming immensity of the project into perspective. I could slowly work on the vine removal — a little bit at a time.
Over this past week I have worked a little each day to rid the chain link fence of the vine system. Yesterday — 6 days after beginning the project — I stepped back from the fence and realized how far I had come in the goal of ridding the fence of vines. Of the 120 feet I have de-vined approximately 105 feet of the chain link fence and I am encouraged by the progress.
The seeming immensity of the project — to remove the vines from the fence — slowly lost it’s immensity. My sense of being overwhelmed has been replaced with the sense of empowerment that comes from achieving a goal.
I appreciated what my friend shared with me at the onset of the project, “… a little at a time is the best plan”. His words empowered my ability to enjoy the process as I moved toward achieving my goal.
Today’s Thought
My friend if you have something that you want to achieve in your life do it — as my friend encouraged me — a little at a time. My friend helped me to remember what I have shared with others here in Second Chance to Live. I want to encourage you with that thought, The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step, so take that step and keep moving. Before long you will be able to look back and see how far you have come. And remember that “… a little at a time is the best plan” for achieving your goal.
“Most of us have far more courage that we ever dreamed we possessed.”
