Hello and welcome back to Second Chance to Live. I am happy to see that you decided to stop by to visit with me. Over the past 6 months I have been given the opportunity to facilitate a group at a day program for individuals who have experienced a traumatic / acquired brain injury. The group that I facilitate is located at Hinds Feet Farm, which is located 30 minutes north of where I live in North Carolina.
Hinds Feet Farm is located in the country and beautifully nestled with in woods — with very easy access to anyone who may be interested. During each of the past 6 months the director has asked me to bring one of my articles — from Second Chance to Live — to share with the participants of the group to generate discussion. Hinds Feet Farms has endorsed what I am doing through Second Chance to Live.
The focus of my participation in the group (s) process has been to awaken the participants to “carpe diem” and to encourage, motivate and empower the members to dream again; to not give up on their processes, or on a loving God or on themselves; and to learn from all of their circumstances and the opportunities that they are given.
My natural style of conveying information is through a motivational / inspirational presentation format. In my desire to enhance the lives of the participants with in the group (s) — over the past 6 months — I have sought to use different methods to encourage, motivate and empower the members with in the group. With my understanding of how different individuals learn, I have incorporated a dry erase board to help visual learners while explaining the principles found with in my article (s) from Second Chance to Live so as to meet the needs of the auditory learns with in the group. I have also sought to faciliate groups with out the use of a dry erase board to generate discussion.
In lieu of my desire to be a more effective group facilitator — following each group — I have asked for feed back from the programs director and co-director.
Each month I have been told by the program director that both the participants and the staff have learned so much from each of my articles. In addition, both the director and co-director have been kind enough to provide empowering feed back and suggestions.Through the feed back that I have received I have been able to apply those suggestions. Consequently, the dynamics of the group (s) has been enhanced. Through the process of having the opportunity to facilitate and co-facilitate group (s) — on a monthly basis — I have grown in both my process and my personal awareness. Specifically, I have come to accept that I am a better co-facilitator than the primary facilitator for some groups. Because of my experience at Hinds Feet Farm I have grown in my effectiveness as a facilitator, a counselor and a motivator.
