Welcome back to Second Chance to Live. I am glad you decided to stop by and visit with me. I have been pondering a reality. Today is the first day of the rest of my life. Once today is gone, my allotted time to live in today is gone forever. I will not get to do a mulligan – a do over – with today’s time. Consequently, I have arrived at a good rule of thumb. Do not compare yourself, your journey, your process, you experience, your circumstances or your destiny with anyone’s journey, process, experience, circumstances or destiny. Comparing only breed’s competition. When I compete to qualify my worth or value, I hamstring my ability to run my race.
Over time I have learned some painful, but important lessons. When I compare my process to another individual’s process I place a judgment on my journey. In so doing, I either become haughty or debased. My energy is subsequently diverted away from creating with my being to justifying, defending or explaining my worth and value. My creativity invariably becomes hamstrung by the fear that I will not be able to measure up to someone’s expectation. My creative energy shifts away from creating with my being, to satisfying a qualifier. I have found that when I seek to justify my worth, value and being I become a human doing. When I become a human doing, my creative energy is exchanged for a lie. My authentic self is discarded as insignificant as I attempt to find my worth and value through a position or an identity. As a traumatic brain injury survivor I have my own unique set of circumstances. If you are a traumatic brain injury survivor or you are living with a disability, you have your own set of unique circumstances. My experience has taught me to live in today, learn from my process and take advantage of the opportunities that are given to me. As I run my race, I am set free to participate in my life and use my gifts, talents and abilities. My creativity is set free to flourish from the core of my being because I am not encumbered by expectation (s). My good becomes good enough because I am running my own race. As you run your race, my friend, you are freed to celebrate in your process while you use your gifts, talents and abilities. Your being is channeled through your disability. You disability becomes your ability because you are not competing with anyone. Please read my post, Following your bliss…regardless.
As we chose to run our own race — at our own pace – our circumstances provide the conduit to living the life we have imagined. Although we may not see how all the pieces of our process are falling into place, we are encouraged because hope encourages us to stay in our race. Consequently, we no longer need to judge ourselves through the prism of another person’s race or pace.
